On April 6, 2026, during a flyby of the far side of the Moon, the crew of the Artemis 2 mission and astronauts aboard China’s Tiangong orbital station were farther apart from one another than humans had ever been in space. This record became a vivid symbol of both cooperation and rivalry in modern space exploration.
How the Record Was Set
Astrophysicist and well-known satellite tracker Jonathan McDowell carried out the calculations and published them in a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter). He compared the distance between the Orion capsule (named Integrity) and the Tiangong station, as well as between Orion and the International Space Station (ISS).
The maximum distance between the Artemis 2 crew and the astronauts aboard Tiangong reached 419,643 km (260,754 miles). The distance to the ISS was slightly smaller—419,581 km. As a result, the Chinese station became the record-holder for the greatest distance from the American crew.
McDowell explained in a comment to Space.com that when NASA announced the record distance from Earth, he immediately wondered what the distance to the ISS had been. He added that he had initially intended to avoid doing the calculations, but after several people asked about it on social media and via email, he proceeded to work it out.
Context of the Record
The previous record for the greatest distance between humans in space was set in April 1970 during the Apollo 13 mission. At that time, due to an onboard accident, the astronauts were forced to fly around the Moon and return along a free-return trajectory, moving 400,171 km away from Earth. There were no permanent space stations in Earth orbit at that time, so no direct comparison was possible.
Now, thanks to the simultaneous presence of humans on a cislunar trajectory and in Earth orbit, the record increased by several hundred kilometers.
What This Means for the Future
McDowell suggested that although the record was interesting in itself, it carried a deeper meaning.
He noted that to some extent the achievement was significant because it marked the beginning of a transition from asking how far the most distant humans were from Earth to asking how widely human civilization had spread. He added that one day distances might be measured between Mercury and the moons of Saturn.
