Despite a successful launch on April 1, 2026, the Artemis II mission was not without technical challenges. Both before liftoff and during the flight, the crew and ground teams encountered several issues—from communication glitches and battery concerns to a non-functioning Outlook in space. Fortunately, all of them were resolved quickly, and the Orion spacecraft remains on a steady course toward the Moon.
Issue with the Flight Termination System (FTS)
About two hours before the launch window opened, the mission was declared a “no-go.” The reason was a loss of communication between the Eastern Range and the rocket’s Flight Termination System. This system is critical, as it allows ground controllers to send a self-destruct command if the rocket deviates from its trajectory.
The issue was resolved in an unconventional way. One of the launch managers went to the Vehicle Assembly Building and retrieved legacy hardware from the Space Shuttle era. This older equipment helped restore the command link, after which the launch was cleared to proceed.
Battery Overheating in the Launch Abort System
Another pre-launch issue involved the Launch Abort System (LAS). One of its two batteries showed an unexpected rise in temperature. Engineers spent about an hour diagnosing the situation and ultimately concluded that the problem was not with the battery itself, but with a faulty sensor reading. After recalibration or correction of the readings, the temperature returned to normal, and the system was deemed ready.
Temporary Loss of Communication After Launch
Approximately 50 minutes after liftoff, NASA briefly lost contact with the Orion capsule for several minutes. During a late-night press conference, Administrator Jared Isaacman reported that the issue had been quickly resolved. The exact cause is still under investigation, but it did not affect the mission’s progress.
Toilet Malfunction Onboard
Once in orbit, the crew needed to install and activate the onboard toilet system. This process also encountered difficulties due to what was described as a controller issue. Mission specialist Christina Koch personally handled the troubleshooting and successfully resolved the problem.
Mission Control later reported that the toilet was ready for use and advised allowing the system to reach operating speed before introducing liquid.
An Unexpected Microsoft Outlook Problem in Space
One of the more unusual incidents involved a malfunction of Microsoft Outlook. Commander Reid Wiseman reported to Earth that there were two instances of Microsoft Outlook onboard, and neither was working.
The situation brought some lighthearted moments both on Earth and in orbit, but it also highlighted how even in deep space, astronauts still rely on familiar Earth-based software.
Good News: Manual Control and a Lunar Sunrise
Amid these minor setbacks, there were also several positive developments. The astronauts witnessed a lunar sunrise from space for the first time—an unforgettable sight. In addition, the crew successfully conducted a manual control test of the Orion spacecraft. This is a critical capability, as future missions will require astronauts to perform docking maneuvers with a lunar lander.
What’s Next
Orion is currently on a 10-day mission. The spacecraft is expected to reach the Moon in about four days, around April 6. After flying around the far side of the Moon, a gravitational maneuver will send it back toward Earth. Splashdown is scheduled for April 10 in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego.
