Apple is rumored to already be working on the second generation of its foldable iPhone. Photos of a purported iPhone Duo 2 prototype have surfaced online, showing a significantly redesigned rear camera module: instead of two lenses, it could feature three, including a telephoto lens. Another possible addition is an under-display Face ID system. The device is expected to launch in the second half of 2027.

Three cameras instead of two

Leaker Majin Bu published the photos of the purported prototype. They show a foldable smartphone with an elongated, pill-shaped camera module. Its overall design resembles the module on the current iPhone Duo, but it is noticeably longer.

The main change is the number of lenses. If the information is confirmed, the iPhone Duo 2 will feature a full triple rear camera system consisting of a main camera, an ultrawide camera, and a telephoto camera.

The latter is particularly interesting: a telephoto lens is precisely what the current model lacks. Adding one would expand its optical zoom capabilities and bring the foldable smartphone closer to Apple's conventional flagships in terms of camera performance.

For now, however, this remains the purported configuration of a prototype. The company has not disclosed the final camera specifications.

Apple could bring Face ID back to the foldable iPhone

The second possible change concerns the biometric authentication system.

According to rumors, Apple is experimenting with an under-display version of Face ID, similar to the one rumored for the iPhone 18 Pro. This would allow facial recognition sensors to be placed beneath the display, reducing the number of visible components on its surface.

The current iPhone Duo uses a fingerprint scanner. Switching to Face ID would therefore be a significant change, both technically and in terms of the user experience.

However, it remains unclear how far testing of the new system has progressed or whether it will make it into the final version of the device.

Launch expected in 2027

According to preliminary reports, Apple plans to release the iPhone Duo 2 no earlier than the second half of 2027. This means there is still plenty of time before an official announcement, and the smartphone's design and feature set could change.

For now, the most notable areas of improvement are the camera system and revamped biometrics. If both additions make it into the production device, the second-generation foldable iPhone will gain two important advantages: a more versatile camera and a modern facial recognition system.

However, the published photos and the leaker's information do not yet confirm the smartphone's final configuration. Apple traditionally does not comment on the development of unannounced devices, so these details should be treated as preliminary leaks.
