Chinese manufacturers continue to experiment with active cooling in smartphones, and now Xiaomi is joining Honor and other brands. According to the well known insider Digital Chat Station, the company is working on a device with a fully integrated cooling fan. This was reported by GSMArena.

Key features of the upcoming flagship

According to the leak, the smartphone will have a flagship MediaTek Dimensity 9500 chipset, a display with 1.5K resolution and an ultra high refresh rate whose exact value has not yet been disclosed, a fan built into the main camera module, and water and dust protection rated at IP68.

The presence of active cooling while maintaining full water resistance is a technically complex solution that Honor has already managed to implement in its Win model. This suggests that Xiaomi is taking a serious engineering approach to the overheating problem in high performance devices.

Most likely the Redmi K90 Ultra

Based on the set of characteristics, especially the use of the Dimensity 9500 processor, the new device is most likely the Redmi K90 Ultra. Information about this model had already appeared earlier. It is expected to feature a 6.8 inch LTPS OLED display with a 165 Hz refresh rate, a metal frame, an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner under the screen, and a battery with a capacity of at least 8000 mAh.

The design of the device remains unknown, as there are no official renders or photos yet. However, insiders are confident that it is the K90 Ultra that will receive the active cooling system.

Why fans are appearing in smartphones

Active cooling is a response to the constant growth in processor and graphics performance. Modern flagships heat up so much during gaming and heavy workloads that passive cooling systems can no longer cope effectively. Chinese brands were the first to take a radical step by integrating a built in fan, which efficiently removes heat and allows the device to maintain peak performance for longer periods.

Honor Win has already shown that such a design can be compatible with full IP68 and IP69K protection. Xiaomi appears to be following the same path, but with an emphasis on a record breaking battery capacity and a top tier MediaTek chipset.
