According to a leak, Apple is preparing a notable change to the display design for the anniversary generation of the iPhone. Prototypes of the iPhone 20 Pro and 20 Pro Max are allegedly being tested with quad-curved OLED panels, very thin bezels, and a smaller cutout for the front camera. At the same time, the company may skip the iPhone 19 name and jump straight to iPhone 20 in honor of the 20th anniversary of the original smartphone.

The display will get bigger, but the key change is not the diagonal size

The new models were reported by insider Digital Chat Station. According to the source, the iPhone 20 Pro will get a 6.41-inch display with a resolution of 2686 × 1236 pixels, while the iPhone 20 Pro Max will have a 6.96-inch panel with a resolution of 2912 × 1340 pixels.

This is only a slight increase compared to the current generation. The iPhone 18 Pro has a display measuring about 6.3 inches with a resolution of 2622 × 1206 pixels, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display with a resolution of 2868 × 1320 pixels. Pixel density in the upcoming models is expected to remain at around 460 pixels per inch.

So the main change may not be a few extra tenths of an inch, but the very design of the front panel.

Apple is experimenting with a display curved on all sides

According to the leak, early iPhone 20 Pro prototypes feature an OLED panel with Quad-Curved technology — a gentle curve along all four edges. At the same time, this apparently does not mean a return to the classic “waterfall” display with heavily curved sides.

Apple is believed to be using a very slight curvature together with optical effects to visually hide the display boundaries. As a result, the screen will appear almost bezel-less while the edges remain suitable for normal touch control.

This approach should solve one of the main problems of strongly curved displays: the farther the image extends onto the side surfaces, the harder it is to ensure predictable touch response and avoid accidental touches.

For now, however, this concerns prototypes only. The design Apple is currently testing will not necessarily become part of mass-produced smartphones.

Dynamic Island may also become smaller

Another change concerns the area at the top of the screen. According to the leak, Apple is testing a noticeably smaller cutout for the front camera and other components.

This means that Dynamic Island in future Pro models could become more compact. The source does not specify exactly how much smaller the cutout will be or whether the Dynamic Island concept itself will change.

This is where the design may prove more important than a larger diagonal size. If the bezels become thinner and the area occupied by the front-facing components takes up less space on the screen, the iPhone’s front panel will visually move closer to what Apple has been trying to achieve for several years through the gradual reduction of cutouts.

Why Apple may call the smartphone iPhone 20

A separate part of the leak concerns the name of the future generation. Digital Chat Station claims that Apple may skip the iPhone 19 designation and unveil the iPhone 20 directly in 2027.

The reason seems logical: 2027 will mark 20 years since the release of the original iPhone. If the company really decides to emphasize the anniversary, the name change could be accompanied by a more noticeable design update.

In that case, an almost bezel-less display would fit well into the concept of an anniversary model: instead of another small change, Apple could focus on the appearance of the device and the way its front panel is perceived.

At the same time, there is still no confirmation that the company will actually abandon the number 19. All information about the specifications of the iPhone 20 Pro and Pro Max also comes from leaks and early prototypes.

The anniversary iPhones are expected to be unveiled in September 2027. Before then, Apple may still change both the screen design and the overall concept of the devices.
