An international scientific seminar dedicated to the application of artificial intelligence for monitoring, protection and early warning in vital services and critical infrastructure has opened at Yerevan State University. The event is being held with the support of NATO’s Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme.

The seminar is titled “AI-Based Monitoring Systems, Regional Data Exchange and Early Warning Systems in Vital Services and Infrastructures.” It is co-organized by the Yerevan-based Center for Technologies and Risk Studies (CenTRiS) Foundation and the University of Calabria (Italy), while Yerevan State University is hosting the event. The program is co-chaired by Professor Francesco Lamonaca on behalf of the NATO member country and Grigor Babayan on behalf of the partner country.

Energy, water and transport

The seminar focuses on three main areas. The first is monitoring energy, water and transport networks. The second is secure data exchange between institutions and across borders. The third is the development of predictive models that will allow early warning systems to become not merely a response tool, but a mechanism for preventive risk mitigation.

Ambassadors and embassy representatives from Italy, Georgia, Finland, Ukraine, Canada and Poland are taking part in the opening ceremony on September 15. Also participating in the event are the rector of Yerevan State University, Armenia’s deputy minister of high-tech industry and artificial intelligence, and the chair of Armenia’s Information Systems Agency. The rector of the University of Calabria will address participants online.

Over four days, specialists from 14 countries will present 37 reports, five of which will be delivered online.

Four days of discussions and technical visits

The program also includes roundtables, a technical visit to the Supercomputing Center of Yerevan State University and the CRISP laboratory. The seminar will conclude with a final session during which recommendations based on the discussions are expected to be adopted.

The seminar’s final conclusions will be published in open access in NATO’s Science for Peace and Security publication series.
