Santiago Calatrava is a Spanish architect, engineer and sculptor who transformed the perception of bridges and turned them from utilitarian structures into futuristic works of art. His creative style combines aesthetics and innovative engineering solutions inspired by the principles of Le Corbusier. Thanks to this, Calatrava is called the leader of romantic high-tech and the master of the "bio-tech" style.
One of Calatrava's most famous innovations was a unique type of cable-stayed bridge with a single support. Such a bridge seems to balance: a pylon, inclined towards the bridge, supports the structure with the help of cables, creating the effect of stability due to the subtle balance of forces.
Operating principle:
- The pylon pulls the bridge up, creating tension.
- The bridge itself pulls down with its own weight.
- At the point of equilibrium, all loads are fixed on one of the banks.
The result is a visually light and dynamic structure that looks more like a sculpture than a traditional bridge.
