Qualcomm's upcoming flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro, is rumored to feature technologies previously found only in gaming graphics cards. According to leaks, the chip will include AI-powered image upscaling and frame generation.

What is AI Frame Fusion

One of the processor's key features will be support for AI Frame Fusion technology. However, this will be exclusive to the Pro version, which comes with the Adreno 850 GPU and two dedicated Matrix ALU units.

These units won't just handle AI tasks — they'll also accelerate operations related to graphics memory. This approach could significantly boost performance in demanding applications and games.

How the technology is expected to work

AI Frame Fusion is said to upscale images from 1080p to 1440p by analyzing various graphical data: motion vectors, scene depth information, low-resolution color buffers, and previously rendered frames.

Additionally, frame generation will work similarly to Nvidia's DLSS. The system will create intermediate frames between original ones, improving smoothness without putting a heavy load on the GPU.

When to expect it

If the rumors prove accurate, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro will be one of the first mobile chips to bring gaming features previously available mostly on PCs to smartphones.
