More powerful processors and better graphics: Apple introduces new MacBook Pro and Mac Mini

January 17, 2023  21:00

Apple has revealed its first new products this year, faster versions of its high-performance MacBook Pro notebooks and Mac mini desktops.

According to Bloomberg, the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro don't look any different from their previous models released in late 2021, but the new products have more powerful M2 Pro and M2 Max chips to replace the M1. Pro and M1 Max processors.

Last year, the product line brought in $40.2 billion in revenue for the company, which represents more than 10 percent of the tech giant's revenue. The company also plans to outfit its high-performance Mac Pro desktop computer with the M2 chip later this year. Apple is also working on new versions of the MacBook Air, including a larger model with a 15-inch screen.

The chips in the latest models make the new products even more efficient. The M2 Pro chip will now have up to 12 cores of the main processor instead of the previous maximum of 10. Graphics capability now reaches 19 cores, up from the previous 16.

The laptop's unified memory has also been increased to 96 GB on models with the top-of-the-line M2 Max chip. Previously, the figure for both computers was 32 GB. The amount of internal memory is 8 terabytes. Battery life has increased slightly: from 17 to 18 hours for the 14-inch model and from 21 to 22 hours for the 16-inch version.

Apple also announced that the new MacBook Pro gets WiFi 6E, which can provide better wireless performance. The new MacBook Pro also gets a more powerful HDMI port.

The Mac mini also looks the same as its predecessor, and comes more than two years after the last update to that computer. The Mac mini also has two processor options, the same M2 and M2 Pro.

By creating the Mac mini with the faster M2 Pro chip, the company was able to do away with the Intel chip. Today, the company also stopped selling Mac mini computers that don't run on Apple's processor. The only computer in Apple's line that currently runs on an Intel processor is the Mac Pro desktop computer.

The updated 14-inch MacBook Pro costs from $1,999, and the 16-inch version still costs $2,499. The Mac mini costs $599, which is $100 less than the previous version. Apple said shipments of all the new products will begin Jan. 24.
