iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus may get 120Hz OLED ProMotion displays, which were only available on Pro models

Next year, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus may come equipped with low-power OLED ProMotion displays. For the first time, the ProMotion technology, currently exclusive to Pro models, is expected to be available in standard iPhone models. This information is reported by The Elec, citing industry insiders.

The current iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus utilize low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) panels, while the Apple iPhone 15 Pro models feature more advanced panels made of low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LPTO). LPTO panels support ProMotion, allowing for a display refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, providing smoother scrolling and video playback when needed.

ProMotion also enables reducing the display refresh rate to a more energy-efficient level, down to 1 Hz. This feature allows iPhone 15 Pro screens to implement an always-on display function, showing clocks, widgets, notifications, and lock screen wallpapers even when the device is locked.

It is anticipated that Apple will continue using less advanced LPTS panels in the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus this year to maintain differentiation between standard and Pro models.

According to The Elec, Chinese supplier BOE hopes to supply Apple with LPTO panels for the iPhone 17 series, but there are still questions regarding whether it can achieve the necessary production capacity while meeting Apple's quality control standards.

If BOE cannot meet these requirements, Apple is likely to turn to other suppliers such as Samsung and LG Display for LPTO panels, while relying on BOE for OLED panels based on LPTS for older iPhone models and the iPhone SE4.
