One of the most awaited events in the world of technology will take place this evening: Apple's annual September presentation. This year it is called Wonderlust. The event will start at 9pm Armenia time, and it can be watched on Apple's official website, through Apple TV, Apple YouTube channel, and, of course, directly on NEWS.am Tech in the player below.
The main “star” of the presentation will be the new iPhone smartphones. One of the main changes in the iPhone 15 family will be the switch from the Lightning port to the more versatile USB-C. While Apple may tout this as an innovation, it should be remembered that this change is due to the European Union's requirement to introduce a universal charging connector.
According to Apple tech expert Ming-Chi Kuo, all iPhone 15 models will have a USB-C connector, but only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will benefit from faster data transfer. According to Kuo, both of these models will have at least USB 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3 support, while the base model iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will be limited to USB 2.0. The switch to the new connector will also improve charging speeds, enabling up to 35W of power instead of the previous 20W—although this is not yet confirmed.
Another important change will be the introduction of the Dynamic Island feature in all iPhone 15 models. This change was predicted last year by analyst Ross Young. Currently, Apple offers this feature only on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. Also, all iPhone 15 models are expected to have an U2 ultra-wideband chip.
According to Bloomberg reporter and analyst Mark Gurman, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will have a titanium frame and narrower bezels around the display. In addition, these models will have a more powerful 3nm A17 processor, while the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will most likely get the A16 processor used in the iPhone 14 Pro.
Another innovation that may appear exclusively on the iPhone 15 Pro Max is the periscope lens with 6x optical zoom.
These updates, however, may affect the pricing of these smartphones. According to a Wedbush analyst, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max will cost $1,099 and $1,199, respectively, which is $100 more than their predecessors. Meanwhile, the price of the basic iPhone models will remain the same.
In addition to the iPhone 15, Apple will present new models of smartwatches at today's presentation. There are still few official details about them, but they are expected to have updated processors, new features, and powerful batteries that will ensure longer operation of the device on a single charge.
One of the important moments of this presentation will be the transition from the Lightning port to the USB-C connector, which will affect not only the iPhones, but also other Apple devices. For example, it is assumed that the AirPods Pro will also have a charging case with a USB-C connector. However, there is still no information about possible changes to the specific earphones.
Finally, Apple will introduce updates to its operating systems, including the iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, and watchOS 10. The topic of augmented reality can also be touched upon during the presentation.
