Apple has unveiled the new generation of AirPods 5 wireless earbuds. The main upgrades include more effective active noise cancellation, improved sound quality, volume control via the earbud stem, and expanded Siri and Apple Intelligence capabilities.

According to the company, AirPods 5 suppress background noise 50% more effectively than the previous model. Apple calls it the best active noise cancellation in the industry. ANC is now standard across the entire AirPods lineup.

Volume can be adjusted via the stem

AirPods 5 now let users adjust volume by swiping along the earbud stem. Previously, this control was available only on AirPods Pro. Users no longer need to take out their iPhone to make the sound louder or quieter.

The earbuds also feature an improved Transparency mode. It allows users to hear voices and surrounding sounds more naturally without taking off the AirPods.

The Adaptive Audio feature automatically adjusts the balance between noise cancellation and Transparency mode depending on the environment. Conversation Awareness, in turn, lowers playback volume when the user starts speaking.

Siri will be able to take personal context into account

AirPods 5 are equipped with the H2 chip and support hands-free Siri control. Through the earbuds, users can ask questions, search for information, perform actions, and get directions.

The updated Siri, which is expected to launch in beta alongside iOS 27, will be able to take information from messages, emails, photos, and other apps into account. For example, the voice assistant will be able to find a restaurant mentioned in an email or play a song that a friend recommended in a message.

Apple is also expanding the use of Apple Intelligence features. At the same time, the company emphasizes that data processing is carried out on-device whenever possible to enhance the privacy of user information.

Up to five hours of use with ANC enabled

AirPods 5 offer up to five hours of listening time on a single charge with active noise cancellation enabled. The charging case extends total battery life to 22 hours in the same mode.

The earbuds are available in two versions:

·       AirPods 5 — from $129;

·       AirPods 5 with wireless charging case — from $149.

Pre-orders have already begun, and shipments will start on September 18.
