Scientists from the University of Bologna have begun developing an electric space engine that runs on water. The project, called WET, offers an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional chemical rocket engines. Popular Mechanics (PopMech) reported on the technology.

How the engine works

The operating principle is based on the transformation of water into plasma. First, the liquid evaporates, then decomposes into hydrogen and oxygen under the influence of high temperature. Then the atoms ionize, forming plasma, which generates kinetic thrust, accelerating the spacecraft.

Advantages of the new technology

Environmental friendliness - unlike chemical engines that emit carbon dioxide, the new method does not pollute the environment.

Availability of fuel - water is available in large quantities on the Moon, Mars and asteroids, which will allow refueling ships directly in space.

Efficiency - the engine power will be from 100 to 500 W, which makes it promising for satellites and long-range missions.

What's next

The first tests will be satellite launches with WET engines, after which the technology can be adapted for manned missions and deep space exploration. If the project is successful, it will be an important step towards autonomous exploration of the solar system without the need for fuel delivery from Earth.
