University of London scientists have set a new world record for wireless data transfer speed, reaching 938 Gbps. This is reported by kp.ru, referring to the Journal of Lightwave Technology.
It is said that to achieve this result, the team used a frequency range of 5 to 150 GHz, which provided a bandwidth of 145 GHz, five times more than the previous record. The new technology is 9,380 times faster than the average 5G network speed in the UK, delivering fast data transfer to meet the growing needs of users.
Scientists have combined radio frequency and optical technologies for the first time, overcoming the limitations of traditional wireless networks. The method involves the use of electronics in the 5-50 GHz range and the application of photonics in the 50-150 GHz range, which significantly expands the available frequency range and increases the data transfer rate.
Experience has shown that the new approach speeds up data exchange between the Internet and end users. It is expected that in the near future, mobile device users will be able to experience connection speed and stability when moving from 5G to 6G, and the large frequency range will help avoid congestion in crowded places.
For example, downloading a 4K movie, which normally takes 19 minutes on a 5G network, will take just 0.12 seconds with the new technology. This system will also be useful in environments where fiber optic connections are not possible, such as factories with complex equipment.
Although the technology has only been tested in the laboratory so far, development of a prototype for commercial use has already begun. Scientists estimate that the technology will be ready for use in three to five years and will have a significant impact on the development of digital communications in the UK and beyond.
