The largest supermoon of the year will be visible on October 17. On this day, the Moon will reach its full phase, being at its closest distance from the Earth, as reported by the Moscow Planetarium.

According to the planetarium, on October 17 at 03:47 Moscow time (04:47 Yerevan time), the Moon will approach the Earth at 357,172 km, which is the closest distance in 2024. The full moon phase will occur at 14:28 Moscow time (15:28 Yerevan time).

A month before that, on September 18, the second largest full moon of 2024 will be visible in the sky, although on this day the Moon will be further from the Earth compared to the October supermoon.

The supermoon occurs when the full Moon is at the perigee of its orbit, that is, at its closest distance from the Earth. At this point, the Moon appears 14% larger than when it is at the farthest point in its orbit, called apogee.

The previous supermoon was observed on August 19.
