A research team led by Brian Walsh of Boston University has developed a concept for actively shielding the planet from extreme geomagnetic storms. The StormWall project proposes using a fleet of satellites that would spray special substances into Earth's magnetosphere to weaken the impact of solar storms.

The idea of a "space wall"

During powerful solar flares, the solar wind carries enormous streams of charged particles. When the magnetic fields of the Sun and Earth align in a certain way, a process called magnetic reconnection occurs, and the energy of solar plasma breaks through into near-Earth space, causing strong geomagnetic storms.

StormWall would interrupt this dangerous process. The system consists of six satellites in geostationary orbit. Each carries a supply of "mass-loading material" — substances such as barium, lithium, sodium, or calcium. When a dangerous storm approaches, the satellites release the substance on command from Earth. Under sunlight, it quickly ionizes, forming a dense plasma cloud.

This artificial plasma cloud intensifies at the magnetospheric boundary, slows down the reconnection process, and causes the solar wind to flow around Earth.

"People have always thought: space is huge, the Sun is gigantic, we just have to sit and accept whatever it sends our way. But we have discovered that we can influence it," said Brian Walsh.

Simulation results

The scientists tested the concept on a model of one of the strongest recent storms — the May 2024 storm. The results showed that StormWall could reduce the intensity of a geomagnetic storm by more than 50%, significantly weakening its impact on satellites, power grids, GPS, and communications.

Practical details

Operating the system would require an amount of material equivalent to roughly a dozen oil tanker trucks. After deployment, the satellites lose their payload — the system is single-use. However, with the development of orbital infrastructure and the growing number of space data centers, such investments could become economically justified.

The risk of long-term contamination is minimal: the artificial plasma is carried away by the solar wind within about six hours and does not return to Earth's atmosphere.
