Scientists from the SETI Institute have studied what signs of human activity could help an extraterrestrial civilization detect Earth. It turns out that our own technologies, as well as specific changes in the atmosphere, could make the planet visible to hypothetical observers. The results have been published in The Astronomical Journal.
How Can We Be Seen from Space?
For the first time, researchers have combined various technosignatures—artificial signals that may indicate the presence of an advanced civilization—into a single analysis.
One of the most powerful among them is radio signals, such as planetary radars that were used at the Arecibo Observatory. Theoretically, such signals could be detected from a distance of up to 12 thousand light-years.
Additionally, modern telescopes, such as the James Webb Space Telescope, are capable of detecting atmospheric changes associated with industrial activity, such as nitrogen dioxide emissions. These technosignatures could be observed up to 5.7 light-years away, slightly beyond Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Sun.
The closer a potential observer is to Earth, the more signs of life become visible. These include:
- Artificial lighting in megacities
- Lasers
- Satellites
- Temperature changes caused by human activity
What Does This Mean for the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence?
The authors of the study believe that their work will not only refine methods for searching for alien civilizations but also help us understand how visible our own planet is in the depths of space.
If intelligent life exists elsewhere, it may already be watching Earth—just as we search for signs of life among distant stars.
