Researchers from the California Institute of Technology have introduced an experimental platform that will enable the study of ultrathin membranes, potentially suitable for light sails. These sails, which can propel spacecraft using laser radiation, may represent a significant advancement toward achieving interstellar travel. The results of this research were published in the journal Nature Photonics.
Project History and Prospects
The concept of using lasers to accelerate small spacecraft to very high speeds gained prominence with the launch of the Breakthrough Starshot project in 2016, initiated by Stephen Hawking and Yuri Milner.
Harry Atwater, Professor of Applied Physics and Materials Science at Caltech, noted that a light sail is capable of achieving speeds that exceed those of any existing spacecraft, opening the possibility for interstellar travel.
Experimental Setup and Methodology
To study the properties of materials for future light sails, the research team developed an experimental setup. The experiments utilized electron-beam lithography to create a nanomembrane made of silicon nitride just 50 nanometers thick. The membrane, measuring 40 by 40 microns, was shaped like a "microscopic trampoline" mounted on springs. A laser beam was directed at the membrane, causing it to oscillate, while scientists measured the force exerted by the laser on the material.
Challenges and Solutions
One of the main challenges of the experiment was that the laser, in addition to exerting light pressure, also heated the membrane, which could skew the results. However, the scientists not only managed to compensate for this influence but also utilized it to measure the force of the laser more precisely.
Future Steps: Nanotechnology and Metamaterials
In the future, the researchers plan to apply nanotechnology and metamaterials to more precisely control the rotation of the light sail.
According to Ramon Gao, one of the authors of the paper, the goal is to develop technology that minimizes the sail’s deviation from the laser beam and restores it to the correct position.
Prospects for Interstellar Travel
The researchers are confident that their work represents a crucial step toward creating a functional light sail, which could one day help reach Alpha Centauri and other star systems, opening up new horizons for interstellar travel.
