NASA's Juno probe has recorded a record-breaking volcanic eruption on Jupiter's moon Io, which surpassed all previously observed phenomena in power.
Io is the most volcanically active object in the Solar System
Io is constantly exposed to the powerful gravitational influence of Jupiter, due to which its interior heats up and causes continuous volcanic processes. It is these processes that make it the most volcanically active body in our system.
A huge lava lake
NASA reported that the hot spot in Io's southern hemisphere covers an area of about 100,000 square kilometers - almost half the area of the UK.
In terms of power, the eruption exceeds the energy of all the power plants on Earth by six times.
How was this discovered?
The phenomenon was discovered using the JIRAM (Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper) instrument, which recorded extreme infrared radiation.
Scientists speculate that the lava lake may be part of a vast system of subsurface magma chambers.

Juno's next close approach to Io is scheduled for March 3, 2025. Scientists hope that the new data will help better understand the satellite's geological activity and its impact on the environment.
