Researchers of the Scientific Center of Zoology and Hydroecology of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia have discovered new species and habitats for science and fauna of Armenia.

As a result of the research of the Laboratory of Experimental Zoology 1 new species belonging to the family of spiders Eresidae was discovered, 50 new species of spiders and 23 species of spiders were registered for the fauna of RA. 10 new species of raccoons were discovered for the fauna of RA within the framework of the PhD thesis of young researcher Anushik Khachatryan.

Scientific articles based on the results have been published in a number of renowned international and national scientific publications such as Springer Nature, Acta Agriculturae Slovenica (University of Ljubljana), Arab Journal Of Plant Protection, Euroasian Entomological Journal, Biodiversity, Indian Journal of Entomology.

New habitats of Darevsky's viper were found in Ashots district of Shirak region. The work was carried out jointly with scientists of St. Louis Zoo, scientific supervisor - candidate of biological sciences Levon Aghasyan. The article was published in Herpetological Review.

Eggs of Dicrocelia parasite were first found in rabbits in Tashir area of Lori region. The oval-shaped eggs, with a thick shell, enter the intestine of the host and are excreted into the external environment. The development of the parasite is carried out by transformation։ intermediate hosts are land snails of the genus Helicella, additional hosts are ants of the genus Formica. Rabbits and other definitive hosts are infected by eating ants containing metacercariae of Dicrocelia and general exhaustion. The scientific supervisor is candidate of biological sciences Marine Vardanyan. The article was published in the International Journal of Agriculture and Biological Sciences.

Recording new species for science sheds light on evolutionary processes by showing how species adapt to their environment and evolve over time due to environmental changes.
