The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has adopted 802.11bb as the standard for light-based wireless communications. The new standard is called Li-Fi.

The authors of the development emphasize that unlike radio frequencies, the use of light has a number of advantages. Li-Fi provides "faster, more reliable wireless connectivity with unprecedented security compared to conventional technologies such as Wi-Fi and 5G."

In the video, the developers show how a Li-Fi system can be integrated into a building's lighting system to transmit data. Part of the infrared spectrum is used to transmit data, so people won't see any flickering or anything like that.

Li-Fi speeds reach 224 Gb/s. Fraunhofer's Dominik Schultz notes that because Li-Fi operates in an exclusive optical spectrum, it results in higher reliability and lower latency.

"The spread of line of sight improves security by preventing penetration through walls, reducing the risk of interference and eavesdropping, and providing centimeter-accurate indoor navigation," said Dominik Schultz.
