The first commercial quantum computer in the United States will be installed at the Cleveland Clinic's main campus in Cleveland, Ohio. Cleveland Clinic and IBM have already begun deploying IBM Quantum System One, and it is expected to be operational in early 2023. It is planned to be used to accelerate (through high-performance computing) drug development and biotechnology research.

As Lara Jehi, M.D. and chief scientific information officer at Cleveland Clinic, pointed out, in today's world it is no longer acceptable to spend decades to go from an idea in the lab to bringing a drug to market. Quantum computers could completely change the situation, greatly accelerating research in drug development.

In the past, IBM installed its Quantum System One only in scientific institutions in the United States, Germany, Japan and South Korea. The above countries reportedly have Quantum System One models installed with a computing power of 27 qubits, which is considered the most powerful quantum system today.

Little is yet known about the characteristics of the system being installed in Cleveland.

What is a quantum computer?

A quantum computer is a computing device that uses the phenomena of quantum mechanics to transmit and process data: unlike "normal" computers, quantum computers operate not with bits, but with qubits, and that is what makes them much more efficient and faster.

A cubit (quantum bit) is the basic unit of quantum computing, a quantum version of the classic binary bit.

A bit can take a value of 0 or 1, and a cubit can take values of both 0 and 1. This makes it possible for quantum computers to save a lot of time and perform calculations much faster than conventional computers.
