The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has officially announced the crew composition for the Artemis 3 mission. This is an important step in preparing for humanity's return to the Moon.

Crew composition

The primary crew includes four experienced astronauts:

  • Andre Douglas (NASA) — mission commander
  • Luca Parmitano (ESA, Italy)
  • Frank Rubio (NASA)
  • Randy Bresnik (NASA)

NASA astronaut Bob Hines has been assigned as the backup crew member.

"The crew will immediately begin training on the Orion spacecraft systems and will also assist in the development and operation of test versions of the landing modules from Blue Origin and SpaceX," NASA reported.

Mission objectives

Artemis 3 will take place in low Earth orbit. The crew's main goals are:

  • Practicing rendezvous and docking with lunar landing modules (Blue Moon and Starship HLS)
  • Testing new spacesuits for spacewalks
  • Checking all Orion systems in a real piloted flight environment

The data and experience gained will be directly used in preparing for the Artemis 4 mission, during which astronauts will land on the lunar surface for the first time in 2028, in the South Pole region.

Program challenges

The crew announcement comes amid serious technical challenges. According to a report from NASA's Inspector General, significant delays in spacesuit development by Axiom Space could jeopardize the 2028 landing plan. The initial timelines for demonstrating the equipment were deemed overly optimistic.
