Microsoft has announced a breakthrough that they believe will finally make quantum computers and quantum computing practical and applicable in practice.

Microsoft and Quantinuum have found a way to significantly reduce the level of noise during quantum computations. This noise essentially refers to errors in calculations that are inevitable in quantum systems due to their nature, which is why quantum computers have mainly been used for research purposes until now.

However, Microsoft claims to have found a way to reduce the number of errors by 800 times! This was achieved by grouping physical qubits into virtual ones, allowing for error diagnosis and correction without destroying them.

"By applying Microsoft's revolutionary qubit virtualization system with error diagnostics and corrections to Quantinuum ion trap systems, we have conducted over 14,000 individual experiments without a single error.

Furthermore, we have demonstrated more reliable quantum computing by diagnosing errors and correcting logical qubits without destroying them. This finally moves us from the current noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) level to level 2 stable quantum computing," the company stated.

Microsoft says that a hybrid supercomputer with just 100 reliable logical qubits will enable scientists to benefit from calculations, and 1000 qubits will be sufficient for commercial use. Microsoft itself tested the new noise elimination approach on a system with just four qubits.
