Elon Musk’s startup Neuralink has achieved a new breakthrough: Alex Conley, a patient paralyzed after a spinal cord injury, has learned not only to pilot a drone through thought commands but also to program controllers that integrate the brain implant with external devices. A demonstration video was published on X (formerly Twitter) on November 9, 2025. The experiment shows that the brain–computer interface (BCI) has moved beyond basic cursor control and now opens the door to full digital independence.
Drone Controlled by Thought: From Concept to Reality
In the experiment, Conley used Neuralink’s N1 implant — featuring 1,024 electrodes embedded in the motor cortex — to remotely control an RC aircraft. His neural signals were decoded by Neuralink’s algorithms and converted into flight commands transmitted to the drone’s receiver. The precision was comparable to a physical joystick, allowing for takeoff, maneuvers, and landing purely through thought.
The key breakthrough was that Conley wrote the integration code himself in Python for an Arduino microcontroller, linking the BCI directly to the flight system. He explained that he was “programming like before — just using thoughts.” This marks the first time a paralyzed patient has independently developed software integrations for a brain implant without relying on engineers.
Previous Achievements: From Eating to Robotics
Conley is the second participant in Neuralink’s PRIME program (after Noland Arbaugh in 2024). Previously, he had mastered:
- Cursor and keyboard control, typing up to 90 characters per minute.
- A robotic arm for eating and personal care.
- Games such as Chess and Civilization VI.
Arbaugh has since expanded his use to include chess matches against AI and digital art in Photoshop. Both participants are quadriplegics who were fully dependent on caregivers before receiving the Neuralink implant.
Current Status: 12 Patients and Growing Trials
As of late 2025, Neuralink has implanted devices in 12 volunteers aged 25–55 with cervical spine injuries (C4–C7). All use the BCI daily for 8–16 hours, with minimal side effects — mostly mild headaches during the first few weeks.
The company is preparing the N1 v2 update, which will feature 3,072 electrodes, wireless charging, and over 24 hours of continuous operation. The FDA has approved expansion of clinical trials to 100 participants in 2026. Neuralink also plans new applications, including vision restoration (Project Blindsight) and speech recovery.
Medical and Societal Significance
Neuralink’s technology is giving paralyzed individuals true independence, allowing them to communicate, work, and create using only their thoughts. Future applications may include controlling prosthetics, exoskeletons, and even vehicles.
Elon Musk has stated that within five years, brain–computer interfaces will be as common as smartphones.
While ethical and privacy concerns remain — particularly regarding access to neural data — the results are undeniable: twelve people once confined to wheelchairs are now interacting with the world through thought alone.
