Apple’s iPhone 17 series has confidently outperformed its predecessor in sales in China and the United States, writes research firm Counterpoint in its report. In the first 10 days after release, the new model recorded a 14% increase in sales compared to the iPhone 16 over the same period in these key markets, which account for the majority of Apple’s smartphone revenue. In the third quarter of 2025, the iPhone generated 47% of the company’s total revenue, with 44% coming from the Americas and 16% from Greater China.
Base Model Sets the Trend
The base model of the iPhone 17 has shown particularly impressive growth. In China, its sales nearly doubled compared to the iPhone 16 over the same period, while overall sales across the U.S. and China markets grew by 31%. In the U.S., significant demand has been noted for the premium iPhone 17 Pro Max, driven by long-awaited upgrades. Survey data indicates that 71% of consumers plan to purchase a new iPhone in 2025, a 3% increase from 2024, with 73% of them leaning toward Pro models, writes the analytical firm.
Why Consumers Choose the iPhone 17
The base iPhone 17 attracts buyers with its excellent balance of price and features. “The base iPhone 17 offers outstanding value for money,” notes Counterpoint Senior Analyst Mengmeng Zhang. Priced at the same level as the iPhone 16, starting at $799, it comes with double the base storage at 256 GB. Key improvements include a new A19 processor delivering up to 40% higher performance, a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display with a 120 Hz adaptive refresh rate and enhanced brightness, and a dual 48 MP camera with improved low-light performance. “Consumers appreciate the enhanced specifications,” adds analyst Ivan Lam. The battery supports up to 24.5 hours of video playback, significantly surpassing the iPhone 16’s performance.
Successful Launch
The iPhone 17 series was unveiled on September 9, 2025, at Apple’s “Awe Dropping” event. Pre-orders began on September 12, with sales starting on September 19, sources report. The lineup includes the iPhone 17, the ultra-thin iPhone Air, and the Pro and Pro Max models. For those considering an upgrade, the iPhone 17 has become the preferred choice over the iPhone 16, which remains on sale with a $100 discount, writes the analytical firm. Demand for the new model remains strong, particularly in China, where it is seeing a significant rise in popularity.
