Modern technologies make it possible to detect hidden surveillance cameras or listening devices using a regular smartphone. This was explained by Vasily Shutov, a lecturer at the Department of Information Security at RTU MIREA (Russia).

A flashlight method

According to the specialist, a hidden camera can be detected by directing the light of a smartphone flashlight at a suspicious area. If a camera lens is installed in this place, it will reflect the light and create a noticeable glare. This is especially useful for checking mirrors, ventilation grilles, household appliances or other potentially suspicious areas.

Cameras with infrared radiation

Some hidden devices use infrared radiation, which allows them to work even in the dark. To detect them, Shutov recommends pointing the smartphone camera at a suspicious place. The source of the infrared signal will be displayed on the phone screen as a flickering dot.

However, not all smartphones are suitable for this method. Some models are equipped with filters that block infrared radiation, or have cameras with insufficiently high resolution.

Check via Bluetooth

Another way is to check the list of devices available for connection via Bluetooth. The appearance of unknown devices may indicate the presence of hidden cameras or other surveillance devices nearby.
