Samsung presented Galaxy Z Flip6 and Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition foldable smartphones at the Unpacked event in Paris yesterday. You can read the article about another smartphone presented yesterday, Galaxy Z Fold6, here.
Galaxy Z Flip6
Galaxy Z Fold6 is built on a single-chip Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 platform. For the first time, a cooling system with an evaporation chamber was used here for Samsung Flip smartphones. The new product has around 12GB of RAM, which can be considered a significant improvement over last year's model's 8GB. There is 256 or 512 GB of built-in memory for data storage. Galaxy Z Flip6 will get 7 years of OS updates and security fixes. The new product runs on Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1.
The main camera is now built on a 50MP sensor and is equipped with an f/1.8 lens. There is optical stabilization and 2x digital zoom without loss of quality. The second rear camera remains unchanged. It is built on a 12MP sensor and equipped with wide-angle optics (123°). The 10 MP front camera has not changed either.
The main screen is now LTPO AMOLED with an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120Hz. The diagonal remains the same at 6.7 inches, as does the FHD+ resolution. The external Flex Display has the same size and resolution as before at 3.4 inches and 720 x 748 pixels, and still runs at 60Hz. It can provide up to 1600 cd/m2 brightness.
The new foldable phones also have artificial intelligence features. For example, in Auto Zoom mode, the camera automatically zooms in on the image and builds an optimal frame by focusing on the person's face and determining the background of the image. This is convenient, for example, when taking group portraits, when the smartphone is placed on some surface, and the shooting is carried out without hands. And the Nightography function has been expanded and now has HDR support. Advanced image editing features are available from the Instagram app.
Flex Display is also one of the functions of artificial intelligence. For example, Suggested Replies analyzes the user's recent messages and suggests a reply to incoming messages, so you don't even need to unlock your smartphone to reply.
Samsung has optimized the hinge to make the smartphone thinner when closed. The Galaxy Z Flip6 measures 85.1 x 71.9 x 14.9 mm when closed, and 165.1 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm when unfolded. The smartphone weighs 187 g. The thickness of its predecessor, Z Flip5, was 15.1 mm in the closed state, and 6.9 mm in the open state. The rest of the dimensions remained unchanged, as did the weight.
Battery capacity has been increased to 4,000 mAh, which is a significant increase from last year's Flip5's 3,700 mAh. Charging remains the same at 25W wired (up to 50% in about 30 minutes) and 15W wireless.
The novelty is available in Silver Shadow, Yellow, Blue and Mint colors, but Samsung.com has some exclusive options: Crafted Black, White and Peach (orange). The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6 is now available for pre-order and will go on sale on July 24. The base model with 256 GB of built-in memory costs $1,100.
Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition
During the Paris presentation, Samsung also presented the Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition, which will be given to all participants of the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Games in France.
In terms of technical characteristics, Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition does not differ much from the standard version of the device. However, its body is painted in a bright yellow color and the package also includes a themed case. Interestingly, Samsung has been giving exclusive smartphones to Olympic Games participants since 2016, but this year the athletes will receive the devices even before their official release in the market.
To enable athletes to take advantage of their Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic edition immediately after receiving it, each smartphone is equipped with an eSIM with the possibility of using 100 GB of free data on 5G networks provided by the operator Orange. In addition, the Paris 2024 and Athlete 365 applications are pre-installed on smartphones, which provide athletes with access to a closed social network. The pre-installed Samsung Wallet app will allow you to get free drinks from vending machines located in the Olympic and Paralympic Village.
It is possible that the Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition will go on sale later, but without the bonuses that will be given to athletes. The company did the same with a special edition of the Galaxy Z Flip3, released in honor of the 2022 Beijing Olympics.
Participants in the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games will begin receiving the Galaxy Z Flip6 Olympic Edition on July 18, one week before the opening ceremony.
