YouTube adds subtitles in different languages

February 24, 2023  10:31

The YouTube video hosting site already has the ability to subtitle in different languages, which users can take advantage of by going to the same menu where they used to turn off or on subtitles.

YouTube has been testing the new feature on some content creators' videos for some time, but has since expanded the feature to a wider audience.

In an earlier phase of testing, the feature was used in more than 4,500 videos uploaded in more than 40 languages. As of last month, more than 15% of the time spent watching duplicate videos was shared by users who watched videos in one of the languages offered by the new feature instead of the original.

The company said it also gives content creators an opportunity to increase their audience.

YouTube reports that in January of this year alone, users watched more than 2 million hours of videos subtitled in other languages per day.

The feature is currently only available for long videos, but the company said it is already testing the feature for short videos as well.

The new feature will be available on YouTube for PCs, mobile devices, tablets and TVs.

For example, in the case of one of the videos from the popular MrBeast channel, 11 languages besides English are currently available: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish and Turkish.
