Tesla introduces new Optimus Gen 2 robot, which is lighter and faster

December 13, 2023  20:15

Tesla has unveiled Optimus Gen 2, the latest generation of its humanoid robot capable of undertaking various tasks to assist humans.

Tesla aims to create a humanoid robot that could be versatile enough to replace human labor, although many doubt the feasibility of this goal in the short term. The company believes it is achievable by leveraging its developments in artificial intelligence from its autonomous vehicle program and expertise in batteries and electric motors. Tesla has asserted that its cars are already robots on wheels, and transforming them into humanoid form is the next step to replace humans in certain tasks.

Previously, Tesla announced that Optimus undergoes comprehensive training using neural networks and can autonomously perform new tasks, such as sorting objects. The new version of the robot is now equipped with all the drives and sensors developed by Tesla. The company claims that the new version can walk 30% faster and has reduced weight by 10 kg while improving balance. A video demonstration shows Optimus Gen 2 squatting while maintaining balance.

One of the most challenging parts of the humanoid robot is its hands, which need to be strong enough to handle significant loads and, at the same time, precise enough to deal with fragile objects. Tesla has stated plans to soon begin using the robot in its own manufacturing operations and, upon proving its usefulness, intends to commence robot sales.

Elon Musk previously stated that potential demand for such robots could reach 10 to 20 billion units, with Optimus accounting for a "significant portion of Tesla's long-term value."
