In the social rehabilitation center for minors in Magadan, a fire broke out due to a self-ignited smartphone but was quickly extinguished. This was reported by the MagadanMedia news agency, citing the press service of the Russian Emergencies Ministry in the Magadan region.

"One of the wards had a phone in his hand that started smoking and sparking. The device caught fire, and the fire alarm went off. The fire was promptly extinguished using a fire extinguisher," MagadanMedia writes.

According to the agency, no one was injured as a result of the incident. The property of the social rehabilitation center also did not suffer serious damage – only the linoleum on the floor where the burning smartphone fell was spoiled.

The brand and model of the device are not disclosed. Investigators from the Russian Emergencies Ministry managed to determine that there were some signs of malfunction in the smartphone a few days before the incident.

"This is likely the cause of the fire," speculated MagadanMedia.
