Along with the new generation iPhones, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models, the Apple also presented the flagship iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max models during the autumn presentation. Both received new processors, updated cameras, a USB-C connector with USB 3.0 support and a number of other innovations.
The design of the new iPhones has largely remained the same, but the stainless steel frame has been replaced by a titanium frame. Apple claims that the new iPhone 15 Pro is the lightest iPhone Pro series in the history of the company. In addition, the novelty is distinguished by the thinnest frame around the screen. The overall dimensions of the smartphones have been slightly reduced without reducing the screen size.
The smartphones have an OLED Super Retina XDR screen with a brightness of up to 1600 cd/m2, and the maximum brightness outdoors can even reach 2000 cd/m2. Both smartphone displays have variable refresh rates from 1 to 120 Hz. iPhone 15 Pro got a 6.1-inch screen, and iPhone 15 Pro Max got a 6.7-inch screen.
iPhone 15 Pro, instead of the traditional volume switch of previous iPhones, has received an Action button on the side, which, by holding it down, users will be able to switch between call and silent mode. Using this button, it is possible to perform various actions: start the camera, activate a specific function, etc.
The iPhone 15 Pro has received a new Apple A17 Pro chip, which according to Apple is 10% faster than its predecessor. The chip has six computing cores (two high performance and four energy efficient). It is manufactured on TSMC's 3nm process technology and has about 19 billion transistors. The chip is equipped with a new 16-core neural engine to accelerate the work of artificial intelligence, which is twice as fast as the Apple A16 Bionic; it can process up to 35 trillion operations per second.
The A17 Pro features a new Apple-developed GPU, which Apple says is the biggest change in the company's GPU history, focusing on performance and efficiency, handling heavy applications and new rendering capabilities. Due to this, you can already play such heavy games as Resident Evil 4 on iPhone. The GPU is also said to be 20% faster and even more power efficient
The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max have a new 48MP main camera with a larger sensor, and portrait mode has been updated with a new feature that automatically captures depth information without having to manually select this mode. Thanks to improved Smart HDR, the camera is able to deliver brighter colors with more detail and a wider dynamic range in darker rooms. Thanks to the new nano coating, the frame can no longer "burn". The camera can also shoot at 48MP resolution and save the file in HEIF format (not just ProRAW).
But perhaps the biggest innovation in photography is the iPhone 15 Pro Max's new 5x telephoto zoom lens. The new optical zoom has a 120mm equivalent focal length, is based on a new tetraprism system, and provides a greater range compared to the 3x optical zoom of the regular iPhone 15 Pro. It also uses an advanced image stabilization system with three-way motion compensation and 10,000 micro-adjustments per second; Apple claims that such a stabilization system has been used for the first time in a smartphone.
iPhone 15 Pro also has a new way to record stereoscopic (3D) videos: the smartphone can simultaneously shoot with the main and wide-angle cameras, which allows you to create videos with a 3D effect. Footage can be transferred between iPhones or viewed with Apple's Vision Pro. The wide-angle camera of the new iPhone Pro series phones, as well as the telephoto modules, are based on 12 MP image sensors. There is support for K60 ProRes video recording.
An important innovation for the new iPhones is the transition from the Lightning connector to the universal USB-C. And in iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, Apple decided not only to update the connector, but also to switch to a new version of the standard։ USB 3 is used here with speeds up to 10 Gbps. It is also noteworthy that 4K60 ProRes video can be recorded directly to an external drive connected to the USB connector.
The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will be available in Titanium Black, Titanium White, Titanium Blue and Natural Titanium. Unlike its predecessors, the side edges of the new smartphones are not glossy, but matte, but they still differ from the back panel.
Like the regular iPhone 15, the new Pro series features the new second-generation Ultra Wideband (UWB) Apple U2 chip, which is used to locate lost Apple devices or other nearby iPhones. The new chip has increased the detection range of devices. In addition, with Precision Finding, it is now possible to find the person you are looking for, again through their iPhone. This is very useful for finding someone in crowded places.
Apple has expanded its emergency satellite capability to provide roadside assistance. In the US generally, Emergency SOS satellite emergency call feature is free for two years with the purchase of iPhone 15. There is also a paid option (details not specified).
Contrary to analysts' gloomy predictions, the iPhone 15 Pro has kept the price of its predecessor: $999 for the version with 128 GB of built-in memory. But the iPhone 15 Pro Max has gone up in price and will now start at $1,199 for the base model. But there is one nice detail: its basic version has 256 GB of built-in memory. Both models will be available for pre-order this Friday, with sales starting on September 22.
