October 19, 2022  16:20

Mozilla has announced the release of Firefox 106. The updates include Firefox View support for improved tab management, PDF editing features, and text recognition and extraction capabilities on macOS.

The new version also includes security fixes: Firefox 106 fixed 8 vulnerabilities (2 of which were considered dangerous).

What's new in Firefox 106?

  • The browser has added a Firefox View button that will make it easier to access previously viewed tabs. If you click on the button, it will open a service page with a list of recently closed tabs and an interface for viewing tabs on other devices.

  • The layout of the private mode browsing window has been changed: now it is harder to confuse it with the normal mode. Panels in private mode have a dark background, they also added a text explanation.

  • On the Firefox View page they added the ability to change the appearance of the browser with the built-in Colorways add-on. You can choose from 6 color themes with 3 shade options. The 18 new colorways will be available until January 16, 2023.

  • The built-in PDF viewer has turned on an editing mode. These files will now also be able to risk graphic labels and attach text comments.
  • For Windows users, the ability to use Firefox as the default program for viewing documents in PDF format has been added.
  • Support for text recognition on images has been added: text can now be extracted from pictures on the page and placed on the clipboard. It can also be dubbed using a speech synthesizer for the visually impaired. But for now, this feature is only available on systems with macOS 10.15 and higher. In macOS15, the feature so far only supports English, and in macOS 11.0 and later versions, other languages as well.

At the end of September Mozilla released a version of Firefox 105 in which it fixed 13 vulnerabilities, 9 of which were considered dangerous. And release of Firefox 107 version is scheduled for November 15.
