The famous “Wow!” radio signal, detected in 1977 by the Big Ear radio telescope in Ohio, remains one of astronomy’s greatest enigmas. Recently, an international team of scientists conducted a detailed analysis of archival data, shedding new light on its nature. The results of the study were published in a preprint on the arXiv portal.
What is the “Wow!” Signal?
The 72-second signal was discovered by astronomer Jerry Ehman during the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) program. It stood out as a narrowband radio burst at a frequency near 1420 MHz, which coincides with the emission line of neutral hydrogen — a range considered a potential “communication channel” for extraterrestrial civilizations. Upon noticing the anomalous spike in the printed data, Ehman circled it and wrote “Wow!” beside it, giving the signal its iconic name.
New Data on Power and Frequency
Using modern computational techniques, researchers processed more than 75,000 pages of archival observation logs. The analysis revealed that the signal’s frequency was 1420.726 MHz, not 1420.4556 MHz as previously thought. Moreover, the signal’s strength turned out to be much higher — about 250 janskys, compared with earlier estimates of 54–212 janskys. This makes “Wow!” one of the most powerful radio signals ever recorded.
Ruling Out Man-Made Sources
Scientists excluded the possibility of a terrestrial origin. At the time of detection, no television stations were operating nearby, no satellites were within range, and the Moon was on the opposite side of Earth, ruling out the possibility of a reflection. This makes the hypothesis of a man-made source highly unlikely.
A Likely Explanation
The most plausible version proposed by researchers points to a natural origin — possibly from a cloud of neutral hydrogen. However, no known hydrogen cloud has ever displayed such intensity, making the “Wow!” signal unique. Scientists continue to study the data to determine whether this was a rare natural phenomenon or a potential hint of extraterrestrial intelligence.
