The latest iPhone 16 running on the iOS 18 platform has received the RecoveryOS function. Previously, this feature allowed you to restore Apple Watch and Apple TV software using an iPhone. Now iPhone 16 will be able to be restored using other iPhones.

When iPhone 16 does not work normally and goes into recovery mode (Recovery Mode), it is possible to put an iPad or another iPhone next to it and start restoring the software. The other device will automatically download a working version of iOS and transfer it to the locked device. This means that troubleshooting iOS devices will no longer require connecting them to a computer.

Any device running iOS 18 can be used to restore a locked device, but currently only the iPhone 16 can be restored this way. The latest generation phones ship with a special recovery partition on their disk, which allows you to manage the entire process without loading the main iOS partition.

It's not yet clear whether Apple plans to add this feature to older iPhone models or if it requires changes at the hardware level. In any case, this is significant progress. it makes it much easier for users to troubleshoot software issues without having to take their devices to a service center.

iPhone 16 will go on sale on Friday, September 20.
