Xiaomi shows off humanoid robot that can use a smartphone

Xiaomi demonstrated the new generation of its anthropomorphic robot during the launch event for the Xiaomi 17T and 17T Pro smartphones in China.

In a short video, the robot confidently picked up a Xiaomi 17T Pro smartphone, opened the camera app, used the volume buttons to adjust the zoom, and took a photo. This became one of the most impressive demonstrations of the robot's capabilities.

Xiaomi's robotics development

The demonstration confirms the company's serious ambitions in the field of robotics. Xiaomi had previously announced plans to use its CyberOne humanoid robot on its production lines. The company's CEO, Lei Jun, set a goal of deploying such robots on a mass scale at its factories within the next five years.

Earlier, Xiaomi's robots had already undergone trials in automotive manufacturing: they carried out three-hour shifts installing self-tapping nuts with 90.2% accuracy over a 76-second cycle.

Improvements in the new version

Xiaomi has significantly refined the robot's bionic hand:

• Size reduced by 60% — now comparable in dimensions to a human hand
• Number of degrees of freedom increased by 64%
• The palm now has a tactile sensor with an area of 8,200 mm²
• The gripping mechanism's service life exceeds 150,000 operations
• A "bionic sweat gland" system has been added for efficient heat dissipation during prolonged operation
