The United Nations General Assembly has adopted its first resolution on artificial intelligence. The document, proposed by the United States, calls for global cooperation in the field of AI. According to the American representative, countries supporting the initiative aim to prevent a situation where artificial intelligence controls people.

The resolution is titled "Utilizing the capabilities of secure, protected, and reliable artificial intelligence systems for sustainable development." The United States introduced the initiative, with 120 co-sponsoring countries. This marks the first resolution in the field of AI, as noted by TASS.

"The innovative resolution adopted today strengthens global consensus on secure, reliable, and trustworthy AI systems that promote sustainable development and respect fundamental freedoms," said U.S.

Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield. The document is aimed at ensuring human control over artificial intelligence rather than the other way around: it calls for engaging developing countries in digital transformation; respecting intellectual property rights, protecting personal data, ensuring transparency, predictability, and reliability of AI operations; as well as promoting human oversight of automated decision-making.

The first UN meeting on AI issues took place in July 2023. The organization's Secretary-General supported the idea of creating an agency to formulate global AI regulation standards. He noted significant consequences of both military and civilian uses of this technology. Last week, the world's first "AI Act" was adopted in the EU.
