Galaxy S24, S24+ and S24 Ultra: What you need to know about the new flagships from Samsung?

As part of the first Galaxy Unpacked event in 2024, Samsung introduced its next-generation flagship smartphones - Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+ and Galaxy S24 Ultra. One of the main features of all new products is Galaxy AI - a set of artificial intelligence-based functions that, according to the developers, can infuse everyday life with new possibilities - from unlimited communication to assistance in creativity.

Galaxy AI: Curious and useful features

AI in new flagships can improve various aspects of users' lives, especially in the field of communication. Thus, thanks to AI, Galaxy S24 series smartphones can provide two-way voice and text translation of phone calls in real time. This feature is called Live Translate and it does not require you to install any apps. Moreover, the function works locally and preserves the confidentiality of user telephone conversations. It is also interesting that an Internet connection is not required for translation.

Another interesting innovation is Chat Assist, which can help you choose the appropriate tone of communication so that your statements sound exactly as you originally intended. There's also AI built into Samsung's keyboard that can translate messages in real time in 13 languages. And in the car, Android Auto can automatically analyze incoming messages and suggest appropriate responses and actions.

Note Assist helps you work with texts in the Samsung Notes app: AI can highlight the main ideas in the text, structure it, correct spelling errors, and even select the most important things from the text and present it in the form of a list.

There are also opportunities to transcribe, summarize and translate voice recordings, even if there are multiple speakers. Transcript Assist uses AI and Speech-to-Text technology for this purpose.

The Galaxy S24 has another interesting feature that Google helped develop. Called Circle to Search, users can circle, highlight, underline, or tap anything on the Galaxy S24 screen with a long press on the Home button, and the system will provide Google internet search results for the highlighted query.

The AI capabilities of the new flagships are not limited to this. There are also photo editing tools with which you can remove unnecessary objects from pictures, align frames, change compositions, add parts of the background, and so on.

Specifications

In terms of technical characteristics, there are no special surprises in the new flagships. The older Galaxy S24 Ultra received a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor with a frequency of up to 3.3 GHz, and the Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ smartphones received ten-core Samsung Exynos 2400 with a frequency of up to 3.2 GHz (although in the USA and some other countries there will be versions with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3). The Galaxy S24 Ultra features a vapor chamber cooling system that is 1.9 times larger than the Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Galaxy S24 received 8 GB of RAM and storage capacity of 128, 256 or 512 GB. Galaxy S24+ and S24 Ultra each received 12 GB of RAM, 256 or 512 GB drives. The Ultra will also be available in a 1TB version.

All three smartphones received flat displays on Dynamic AMOLED 2X panels with an adaptive refresh rate from 1 to 120 Hz:

• The base Galaxy S24 has a 6.2-inch screen with a resolution of 2340 × 1080 pixels.
• The average Galaxy S24+ has a 6.7-inch display with a resolution of 3088 × 1440 pixels.
• The older Galaxy S24 Ultra received a 6.8-inch screen with a resolution of 3088 × 1440 pixels.

In terms of cameras, the Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with four rear cameras that can provide four focal lengths. We have already seen three of them in the Galaxy S23 Ultra: the main module has a resolution of 200 megapixels, a wide-angle camera of 12 megapixels and a camera with a telephoto lens with three times optical zoom and a resolution of 10 megapixels. The fourth module is already new.

Instead of 10x optical zoom, there is now 5x optical zoom, but there is a "hybrid" zoom to provide high levels of zoom. The main and two telephoto cameras have an optical stabilizer.

The Galaxy S24 and S24+ cameras remain unchanged from previous models, offering a triple module with different focal lengths. A 50MP main camera, a 12MP wide-angle camera and a 10MP telephoto lens with optical stabilization provide a variety of photography and video capabilities.

The Galaxy S24 series introduces ProVisual, a new AI-powered algorithm that enhances your photography experience and enables creative freedom at every stage of your imaging process. These new algorithms promise to create sharp, rich images with high detail and quality.

In terms of batteries, the Galaxy S24 Ultra retains the capacity of its predecessor and supports wired charging up to 45W. Galaxy S24 and S24+, in turn, received an increase in battery capacity to 4000 mAh and 4900 mAh, respectively.

It's also worth noting that the Galaxy S24 Ultra has a titanium frame and Wi-Fi 7 support, which gives this model some additional advantages. All new Galaxy S24 series products are resistant to water and dust according to the IP68 standard.

Samsung promises long-term support for new smartphones: updates to the Android operating system for the Galaxy S24 will come for seven years. This means that these devices will receive updates to Android 21 if Google releases new versions every year.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra will start at $1,299, which is more expensive than its predecessor. The Galaxy S24+ is priced at $999, while the Galaxy S24 is available starting at $799. Sales of the new models will begin on January 31.
