Important update in WhatsApp: You can now hide your IP address during calls

November 9, 2023  12:21

The WhatsApp messenger has a new option Protect IP address in calls, with which you can hide the user’s IP address from the interlocutor. If you activate this mode, all calls will be routed through WhatsApp servers and your real IP address will be hidden. This innovation will make calls on WhatsApp even more secure, which is very important for users who value privacy.

The new IP protection switch can be found in WhatsApp settings under the privacy section.

A blog from WhatsApp representatives notes that most modern calling applications use direct peer-to-peer connections between participants, which allows for faster data transfer and better call quality, but at the same time requires knowledge of each other's IP addresses. However, IP addresses may contain information that some privacy-conscious users may not want to disclose.

It should be noted that increasing privacy by hiding your IP address does not come without some trade-offs, such as possible reduced audio and video quality during calls. The company warns that users may notice some degradation in call quality when using call relay.

WhatsApp emphasizes that all calls in the messenger are always encrypted, regardless of whether the new IP address protection feature is activated or not.

In addition, the blog reports an additional option announced back in July - blocking unknown callers, preventing spam and providing an additional layer of protection against sophisticated cyber attacks.

WhatsApp emphasizes that ensuring user privacy and security remains one of the company's key goals in providing confidential communications around the world.

Recently, WhatApp also received another update: it will now be possible to use email for authorization. You can also lock chats with a password, which is also important for maintaining privacy.
