Specialists of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology have developed a smart ground georadar on the basis of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), which detects landmines while flying. This was reported to Gazeta.Ru by the press service of the Center of Competence "Artificial Intelligence" of the National Technological Initiative operating in the institute.

"Geo-radar is a type of radar designed to detect and survey objects under a layer of land, water or snow. The principle of its operation is the same as that of all radars. the device emits a radio wave of a certain length and then records the beam reflected by the object. In the case of geo-radar, this impulse is directed downwards, not upwards or sideways," Alexander Rodin, the center's leading expert, explained.

According to him, ground radar is a long-known technology. The peculiarity of the development of Russian scientists is that the data received from the radars are collected and processed with the help of artificial intelligence, which significantly increases the speed of detection of desired objects.

"Such radars can be fully used during humanitarian demining of areas affected by military operations," said Rodin.

According to him, drones with geo-radar can be additionally equipped with gas analyzers. They will allow not only to detect explosive devices, but also to identify the explosives used in them.

The cumulative effect of the use of such sensors will facilitate and speed up the work of military and operational services, as well as reduce the risk of detonation of mines and other explosive materials during their neutralization.
