Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has announced that it plans to create a supercomputer by 2024 that will be 2.5 times more powerful than existing models, Nikkei Asia reports.

The ministry intends to allocate a budget of 32 billion yen (about 225 million dollars) for the new project. The supercomputer will be used in Japan for artificial intelligence (AI) and to support companies engaged in research and development in the field of artificial intelligence.

The magazine also notes that the new supercomputer should help Japanese companies keep up with their Western competitors.

The new supercomputer will be available for use through cloud platforms. The project will be implemented with the participation of scientific research centers operating under the ministry.

In addition, scientists at the Japan Institute of Natural Sciences (RIKEN) are working with Fujitsu to integrate quantum computing into the institute's Fugaku supercomputer, which should be further improved by 2025.
