A new feature is being developed for WhatsApp messenger that could be very useful: users will be able to create nicknames for themselves, which will make it easier to find them in contacts without a phone number, WABetaInfo reports.

Currently, to add a contact on WhatsApp, one would need to know the person's phone number; a QR code can also be used. According to the developers, the introduction of nicknames will potentially make it easier to add contacts and provide more privacy, since users won't have to share their personal phone number with anyone.

As WABetaInfo notes, in the latest update to the Android version of the app, each contact has a dedicated username field.

For now, this feature is under active development and will appear in future updates of the messenger. It is possible that such a feature will appear in the iOS version in the future.

WhatsApp has recently added a long-awaited function that allows users to edit already sent messages. However, this can be done within 15 minutes of sending.

Another new feature that recently appeared in the messenger allows users to protect private correspondence with a password or biometric data.
