Astronomers have, for the first time, detected the presence of ice containing an unusual form of water — so-called semi-heavy water — in the vicinity of a young star that resembles the Sun in its early developmental stage. This discovery provides strong evidence that some of the water in our Solar System may have formed long before the Sun itself, within the cold, dense clouds of gas and dust between the stars. The findings were published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters (AJL).

What Is Semi-Heavy Water?

Semi-heavy water is a variant of the H₂O molecule in which one hydrogen atom is replaced by deuterium — a heavier isotope of hydrogen. These molecules can only form under extremely cold conditions, like those found in dark interstellar clouds. Scientists have long suspected that a significant portion of the Universe’s water originates in such environments, but until now, they lacked direct evidence.

“We detected a clear signature of semi-heavy water in the ice surrounding a young star. This tells us that the water formed before the star itself,” explained Katy Slawinska, a PhD student at Leiden University and lead author of the study.

The Star L1527 and Its Importance

The star around which this unusual ice was discovered is named L1527. It is still in the early phases of stellar evolution and is believed to be a close analog of what the Sun may have looked like when it first formed. The ratio of regular water to semi-heavy water in the ice around L1527 matches what scientists observe in comets and icy bodies within our own Solar System.

This suggests that water may have remained nearly unchanged for millions of years — journeying from interstellar clouds to our planet.

Implications for the Origin of Earth's Water

The discovery has important implications for our understanding of how water originated in the Solar System. Scientists now believe that the water found near L1527 could be a direct ancestor of the water present on Earth today.

We are literally observing the history of water in the Universe. The water we drink, or that makes up our bodies, may have begun its journey long before the Sun existed, said Professor Ewine van Dishoeck, a co-author of the study.

The research team plans to study dozens of other young stars to find out how common semi-heavy water is in the cosmos. Their ultimate goal is to trace the journey of water from its birth in cold interstellar clouds to its arrival on habitable planets like Earth. These efforts could provide deeper insights into the cosmic conditions that allowed life to emerge in the Universe.
