Top smartphone manufacturers continue to sell affordable models without built-in water resistance. Additionally, millions of people use inexpensive button phones. During rainy weather, moisture can enter the device's USB port and damage it, making charging impossible. In an interview with Gazeta.ru, Natalia Golitsyna, head of the telephony department at MTS retail network, spoke about these and other negative effects of moisture on smartphones, as well as ways to protect them.

Golitsyna believes that the most vulnerable elements of a smartphone or phone in the rain are the display and the charging port, also known as the USB port. Damage to either of these components often leads to costly repairs.

“With the screen, moisture can cause dark spots due to backlight issues or a complete loss of image. In the case of the USB port, it may lead to battery problems, reduced performance, or a total inability to charge the smartphone,” said Golitsyna.

According to her, the most reliable way to protect a smartphone or phone from moisture is to use a waterproof case. Such cases come in different models and can be chosen according to individual needs. It is important to ensure that the case is certified to an IP67 standard or higher, which guarantees protection from water jets and immersion at shallow depths.

“You should follow a simple rule — avoid using your phone or smartphone in the rain. If you need to answer a call or message, you can do so using a smartwatch or earphones, which are more likely to be water-resistant. Many modern devices also support voice commands, which can help minimize direct interaction with the phone in adverse conditions,” added the expert.

Golitsyna also recommended not neglecting port protection on the smartphone. It’s best to keep the charging and headphone ports closed when not in use — this reduces the risk of moisture getting inside. Some accessory manufacturers, she added, offer special plugs that can further protect open ports.

Golitsyna also emphasized that if a smartphone or phone has already been damaged by water, you should not attempt to repair it yourself. Trying to fix it on your own will likely not only fail to help but may worsen the situation. Therefore, it is best to seek assistance from a service center immediately.
