Apple plans to equip “almost all” of its products with its own Wi-Fi chip in about three years. This move is expected to reduce the company’s component costs and strengthen hardware and software integration, reports MacRumors.
All current iPhone models are equipped with a combined Wi-Fi and Bluetooth chip from Broadcom, but there are already iPhone 16 models that support Wi-Fi 7 with limited features. However, the iPhone 17 will have an Apple-built Wi-Fi chip with support for the latest version of Wi-Fi 7.
The chip will be produced using TSMC’s 7-nm process, known as N7. This confirms that the iPhone 17 Pro models will include an Apple-designed Wi-Fi 7 chip, and next year, this chip will expand to the entire iPhone 18 lineup.
Apple is also expected to release its own 5G chip next year, starting with at least the next iPhone SE. There are conflicting rumors about whether Apple’s 5G and Wi-Fi chips will be separate or combined into a single chip.
Wi-Fi 7 enables data transmission across the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands simultaneously with a compatible router, allowing for higher Wi-Fi speeds, lower latency, and more reliable connections. Wi-Fi 7 can reach maximum speeds of over 40 Gbps, four times faster than Wi-Fi 6E.
