Samsung has revealed details about its advanced solid-state electrolyte batteries. The latest solid-state battery technology from Samsung will initially be used in premium electric vehicles, providing a range of up to 1000 km. Samsung will begin mass production of these new solid-state batteries in 2027.

Solid-state battery technology promises to eliminate the risk of fire, increase the range of electric vehicles, and reduce charging time. Samsung reported that several automakers are already testing samples of these batteries, although the company did not specify who they are.

"We have been supplying battery samples to customers from the end of last year to the beginning of this year and are receiving positive feedback from them," The Elec quotes Samsung SDI Vice President Koh Joo-young as saying at the SNE Battery Day 2024 conference in Seoul.

Initially, solid-state batteries for electric vehicles will not be cheap, so they will be used only in "super-premium electric vehicles," providing a range of 900 to 1000 km (559 to 621 miles) on a single charge and increased safety.

According to Koh Joo-young, replacing batteries with solid-state ones will reduce weight and space occupied by the battery, which in the long run may lead to a reduction in the cost of the vehicle itself. Therefore, automakers are interested in them, notes Joo-young.

Samsung is also working on other types of batteries for the premium electric vehicle segment, such as lithium-nickel-cobalt-aluminum oxide (NCA) batteries, which use a cathode made from lithium, nickel, cobalt, and aluminum alloys. The advantages of this type of battery include high specific energy, long service life, and high specific power. For the entry-level electric vehicle segment, Samsung is developing simpler "semi-solid-state" batteries. Additionally, the company is working on LFP batteries and batteries that contain less nickel, making them cheaper.

During its presentation, Samsung also reiterated its plans to start production by 2029 of batteries that can charge in 9 minutes and are designed to last for 20 years. Representatives from LG Energy, a competitor of Samsung in the production of batteries for electric vehicles, also spoke at the SNE Battery Day 2024 event. LG is one of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of batteries for Tesla. The company plans to begin producing solid-state batteries later than Samsung, in 2030, also starting with supplies for the premium electric vehicle segment.
