Paid content appears on TikTok: 20-minute videos can be sold for up to $190

Popular social media platform TikTok is enabling content creators a new way to make money; from now on, they can also post videos on this platform, the viewing of which will be paid. These videos can have a duration of up to 20 minutes; in addition, it is possible to combine 80 such videos in a collection.

This new type of content is called Series. Creators can set a price from $1 to $190 for videos in this series. However, the creator will not receive the full amount, as material development costs and app store commission will be deducted from his income. In total, TikTok will probably keep at least 30% of that money.

Viewers will be able to purchase paid content through the TikTok app, and content creators will also be able to use the new Series website to post videos and track performance metrics.

Recently, TikTok has been introducing new monetization formats and methods to compete more effectively with other sites in the US market. YouTube, for example, recently launched monetization for Shorts—which are considered the main competitor to TikTok's short videos—, but TikTok does not have such an option.

This new monetization model is similar to that of several other social media platforms, including Patreon or OnlyFans. However, restrictions on content on TikTok will remain the same.

The paid version of videos is currently only available to some creators; but is expected to be rolled out to all creators on the platform in the coming months.
