The Witcher 4 in development: It will be the biggest game in the history of CD Projekt RED

Polish studio CD Projekt RED has thrown all its efforts into developing a new game, The Witcher 4. No one is working on supporting the studio’s other game, Cyberpunk 2077.

The Witcher 4 will be the first part of a new trilogy in the cult fantasy universe, each game in which is conceived as a full-scale AAA RPG project. 407 company employees are working on the new game, and this is quite an impressive figure. By comparison, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, considered one of the best games of the last decade, had 250 developers working on it. It is possible that The Witcher 4 will become the largest game in the history of CD Projekt RED and will surpass Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher 3 in size.

It is known that the developers switched from their own REDengine engine, on which the company’s previous projects were created, to the advanced game engine Unreal Engine 5. However, there is still very little information about the game itself: details of the plot and gameplay are still kept secret. But we can say with almost 100% certainty that the hero in the new series will not be Geralt of Rivia, but another character. The code name of the new game is “Polaris”.

According to the IGN portal, according to CD Projekt's report for the first quarter of 2024, 56 company employees are currently working on Orion (the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077), and another 20 people are working on Hadar (an RPG in the new franchise). But the action role-playing Cyberpunk 2077, as noted above, was abandoned: only 17 people are involved in supporting the game released in 2020 - all other specialists were distributed between the studio’s current projects.
