Instead of destroying nearly 100,000 old iPhones, Canadian company sold them in China

The Canadian company GEEP Canada, which is Apple's equipment disposal partner, instead of destroying about 100,000 iPhones, sold them in China. This is reported by Bloomberg.

In 2020, Apple sued GEEP after an inspection at the facility revealed that the contractor had resold 99,900 iPhones to China instead of destroying them.

Then the American company demanded 31 million Canadian dollars from the Canadian partner for not fulfilling the contract. The dispute is still pending, and if nothing changes in the case, it could be dismissed in January 2025.

According to the agency's sources, many of the devices that Apple sent for destruction were perfectly usable. The company could sell these devices instead of destroying them, which would be in line with the company's stated environmental commitments.

Apple, which aims to be carbon neutral by 2030, says it prioritizes product reuse. Company representatives highlight significant advances in electronics recycling and claim that Apple products are designed for long-term use.
