Computers with Apple's M chips have a serious vulnerability: What to do?

March 22, 2024  21:19

Researchers have identified a new vulnerability called GoFetch in Apple M chips used in Mac computers. This vulnerability allows attackers to access cryptographic information stored in the processor cache memory, jeopardizing encrypted data, reports ArsTechnica.

GoFetch poses a significant security threat as it bypasses the side-channel encryption algorithm designed to protect against attacks exploiting processor cache vulnerabilities.

Fixing this vulnerability at the hardware level is impossible. Currently, the only solution is to develop a software patch, although it is unclear how this will affect device performance.

Experts strongly advise Mac users (iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, MacBook) to be vigilant and install all available software updates to reduce the risk of potential attacks.

Whether GoFetch poses a threat to owners of iPad tablets with Apple M chips is not specified.
